A lady drops off her laptop to Best Buy so that Best Buy can fix it. Best Buy loses the ladies laptop and now is suing Best Buy for 54 Million dollars. This is a sad story we have all had services performed on our laptops. I buy laptops in pairs so that one can be broken while the other is working.
Anyway where the lady went terribly wrong was to not have an image or back up of her laptop prior to handing it over to from my experience very inexperienced technical resources. Well Best Buy lost her complete laptop with all of her data and now she is in a bad position. Imagine working solely off your laptop and losing all of your work….trust me you can fully imagine the impact if you can learn this mistake from other people do it because it is a very hard lesson learned.
I know because I have been working as a technical consultant and the guy companies call to try and put back the pieces. It is a terrible position to be in and one thing I learned from being a soldier in our beloved Military is excuses are not accepted ever. Don’t show up to a combat situation without your weapon and don’t ever.. not have a back up of your data! Don’t trust your IT guy to back you up don’t trust your spouse to back your data up. Don’t trust the “really smart kid” working at Best Buy to not lose your data. You are always wrong when you lose data and there are no excuses.
In my line of work you only lose data once…you are immediately fired, sued and basically not going to get a good reference once the litigation is over.
